We monitor warfarin levels by using the coagu-check system which means that a capillary blood sample obtained by a finger prick test will give an immediate result. This will then be entered into the computer system (‘RAT’ – ‘Regulating Anticoagulant Treatment’) and you will be given new recommendations for your dosage schedule.
Venous blood samples may still be required from time to time, and at least yearly to check your Full Blood Count.
Patients who are housebound will continue to have venous blood samples taken and results phoned the next day.
